Do all companies pay early at Christmas?
While a lot of employers choose to pay their employees before they go on Christmas break, there are no laws or contractual stipulations to say you must pay employees early in December. Still, it’s a nice gesture and can provide employees with a boost of cash before one of the most expensive seasons in the year.

Do Christmas bonuses have to go through payroll?
Yes, any bonus or commission must go through payroll. That’s because bonuses are considered taxable income, so a portion will need to be deducted as tax and NI.

What’s the tax rate for Christmas bonuses?
As you’ll learn in our guide, the tax rate will be the same as the employee’s income tax rate, bar a few exceptional circumstances — i.e. the bonus pushes the employee into a higher tax bracket.
